The formation of the Young Academy of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences is expected to be finalised this autumn with the election of ten new members. Currently, the Young Academy, which represents the interests of our country's young researchers, has 30 members.

 

The Young Academy may have a maximum of 40 members. This year, it is expected to elect two young scientists in each of the five fields: humanities and social sciences; mathematics, physics and chemistry; biology, medicine and geosciences; agriculture and forestry; technology.

 

The Young Academy is open to motivated researchers working in Lithuanian institutions of research and higher education, who have achieved significant scientific results and are active in their professional and social life, who obtained their doctoral degree no more than ten years ago and are no older than 40 years of age before the last day of the acceptance of applications.

 

Candidates for the Young Academy of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences can be nominated by the senates and research councils of Lithuanian research and higher education institutions, academicians of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, and associations of Lithuanian scientists; young scientists can nominate themselves as well.

 

The Young Academy promotes the creative, scientific, and expert activities of young scientists, voices its opinion on the issues of Lithuanian research policy, and provides opportunities to pursue an academic career, communicate with young academies from other countries, raise the prestige of research and the accessibility of science-based knowledge in society, analyse the development of science in the academic environment, and to activate academic mentorship.

 

It is expected that once the formation of the Young Academy is completed, it will contribute even more actively to the resolution of issues relevant to young scientists, formulation of the research policy, establishment of new contacts, the development and strengthening of cooperation networks, and will initiate various other activities.

 

Members of the Young Academy of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences are elected for a single term of four years. At the end of their term, they will become alumni, continue to participate in the activities with an advisory vote, and will be replaced by new members.

 

The Young Academy of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences was established in 2018. The global movement of young academy started in 2000, when the first Young Academy was founded by a joint agreement between the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the German Academy of Natural Sciences Leopoldina.
