International Liver Cancer Conference

On 14 March 2024, the international multidisciplinary liver cancer conference ‘Liver Cancer Summit 2024’" was held in Kaunas. The conference was organised by the Division of Biological, Medical, and Geosciences of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, together with the European Society of Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Nutrition (EAGEN), the European Society of Digestive Oncology (ESDO), and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. During the conference, gastroenterologists, surgeons, and oncologists shared the latest recommendations and scientific achievements in the field of liver cancer.

The international conference was opened by Prof. Limas Kupčinskas, the chair of the Division of Biological, Medical, and Geosciences of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences., who in his introductory address presented the results of the successfully ongoing national viral hepatitis C screening and elimination programme in Lithuania. Hepatitis C is one of the causes of primary liver cancer. During the 21 months of the program, more than 1.1 million people were screened and 4800 new cases of hepatitis C have already been cured. Prof. Eric Van Cutsem (Belgium), president of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Oncology (ESDO), gave a lecture on the significance of biomarkers personalised liver cancer therapy. The important clinical innovations in diagnosis and management of liver cancer were presented by Prof. Alexander Link (Germany), Prof. Arne Kandulski (Germany), Prof. J.M. Banales (Spain), Assoc. Prof. Tomas Vanagas, Assoc. Prof. Povilas Ignatavičius, Dr Rita Noreikienė, and others.

The conference was complemented by practical seminars held before the conference at the Gastroenterology Clinic and the Institute for Digestive Research. The seminar ‘Methodology of Contrast Ultrasound Examination of Abdominal Organs’ was conducted by the EAGEN expert Prof. Alexander Link, and the seminar ‘Endoscopic Cholangioscopy’ by Prof. Kandulski. Foreign experts shared their practical experience and participated in performing these procedures on patients with complex digestive diseases. In the scientific seminar held at the Institute for Digestive Research, Prof. Jesus M. Banales reviewed current research on the molecular markers of liver cancer.
The international conference is a great start for further multidisciplinary and international collaboration to ensure the best care for patients with primary liver cancer.
