On 19 September 2024, Prof. Ion Tighineanu, the president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, visited the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and other research and study institutions in Vilnius.
In June this year, the leaders of the Lithuanian and Moldovan academies signed a bilateral scientific cooperation agreement. On 4 July, a virtual conference was held to discuss the prospects for cooperation between the two academies. At the meeting in Vilnius, Prof. Jūras Banys, the president of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Zenonas Dabkevičius, the vice-president, acquainted the guest with the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and its activities and showed him around the Academy building. The leaders of the Lithuanian and Moldovan academies of sciences reiterated their commitment to active bilateral cooperation.

Prof. Ion Tighineanu visited Vilnius University where he was received by Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas, the rector of the university and an academician. The guest, who expressed an avid interest in the history of the university and Lithuanian science, had a tour of the Vilnius University Library.

Since Prof. Tighineanu is a representative of the physical sciences, he was professionally interested in visiting the laboratories and the Laser Research Centre of the Faculty of Physics of Vilnius University. During both these visits, Prof. Banys and the representatives of the Faculty of Physics of Vilnius University, among them Prof. Mantas Šimėnas and Dr Julius Vengelis, both members of the Young Academy of the Lithuanian Academy of sciences, acquainted Prof. Tighineanu with the achievements of Lithuanian physicists.

The next visit took Prof. Tighineanu to the Life Sciences Centre of Vilnius University, where Prof. Vytautas Smirnovas, director of the Institute of Biotechnology, presented the activities and achievements of this institution. The president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova also visited the division of the Vilnius University Library in the Sunrise (Saulėtekis) Science and Studies Valley. President Jūras Banys accompanied the guest and talked about the achievements of Lithuanian science on all of these visits. During the talks, both presidents also discussed the existing opportunities for Moldovan scientists to collaborate with scientists from the Lithuanian science centres visited.
